WESTPORT
Beginning with numerous Nursery Schools, Day
Care and Extended Care Facilities, and continuing all the way to a fabulous
Adult Education program, Westport schools are top notch. There are five
Elementary Schools with an average class size of twenty-two students. Every
school has a teacher of programs for gifted students as well as an enriched
language arts study program. The two Middle Schools have distinguished team
teaching programs that allow for classes that encompass Language Arts, Social
Studies, Science and Math. The students' scores consistently exceed state
averages.
The High School students consistently win
honors for their achievements, with the Creative and Communication Arts often
leading the way. They have a prize winning yearbook, newspaper, literary arts
magazine, a scholarly journal, a student-operated FM radio station and one of
the few high school television production studios in the United
States.
The active music and drama departments are
enriched by contributions in the creative area from local residents involved in
the arts-from famous authors to Broadway choreographers. In fact, Westporters
often comment that Staples' musicals are nearly on par with Broadway. To round
out the students education are solid business classes and clubs that encourage
skills that will be required in life experiences.
Because of increased enrollment there has
been an extensive building program resulting in a new building for middle
school and a complete renovation program for all the schools.

WESTON
Westonites are serious about their school
and the school system, and its facilities are among the finest in the state-and
nation. In 1968 the town built all the schools in a campus-style school
complex. Located on a 125 acre wooded tract, Weston's children now assemble in
a community of education. Centralizing the school system and using a 4-4-4-4
system of grade levels has meant a high record of efficiency and excellence.
Expansion projects are currently underway to meet the needs of a considerable
enrollment growth. Weston is committed to keeping its class size small and
commitment is shown by its generous tax base. The parents and the Parent
Teacher Organization are very active and involved with the schools and have a
strong record of volunteering in the schools.
The Board of Education, school
administration, and staff have achieved a level of education excellence that is
unparalleled. There is a Gifted and Talented Program, Special Education, an
Early Learning Center for handicapped children and prominent programs for the
Performing Arts. Other special programming at the high school level includes
maritime studies, a strong foreign language program, independent study
opportunities, and internships with local businesses for high school students.
Proof of academic excellence lies in 95 to 100 percent of graduates going on to
higher education.

NORWALK
The public school system is highly regarded
for its innovated programs and the achievements of its students. There is an
active mentor program in which employees from 44 area corporations invite
students, one on one, to spend one day a week at the company to help them
realize what is required in different jobs. A school-to-work program created
internships for high school juniors and seniors, college-bound or not, based on
their special interests and coordinated with schoolwork. Academically and
artistically gifted children are placed in special programs from grade three,
and the citywide curriculum contains a comprehensive music and art component
through grade twelve. One of the high schools even offers a year of courses in
Japanese history language, and culture, culminating in a two week trip to
Japan. A large number of students from other Fairfield County towns are
enrolled in this program. There is also an active two year Community Technical
College.

First Time Buyers >The Perfect House
Home buyers must often deal with deferred maintenance or repairs. For example, you may have found a terrific house and like many competent home buyers, you included a structural inspection contingency in your purchase agreement. What happens when you find out that your "perfect" house needs some work? Do you ask the sellers to pay for the repairs? Before you answer "yes", there are some important considerations.
Some contracts require that all of the home's systems, such as plumbing, heating, electrical and central air conditioning, be in working order. In this case, the sellers may be obligated to repair any problems with these systems. Leaky roofs, damp basements, or other structural problems may not be covered, however. If you ask the sellers to make these types of repairs, you may void the contract by doing so. The sellers might prefer to negotiate the repairs to keep from losing the sale. If there are other buyers waiting in the wings with back-up contracts, you run the risk of losing the home.
